Are you enthusiastic about heritage, and enjoy working with, and talking to people. Are confident in taking responsibility for a small museum site? Can you spare a Saturday or Sunday most weeks? Are you happy to wear period costume? Do you do any traditional craft activities in your free time that you could bring with you? (e.g. knitting, lace, crochet, rag rugging, sewing, embroidery, quilting, basket making, peg dolls etc.) If so, read on! We are looking for people to help at Brewhouse Yard, a unique social history museum which reflects Nottingham’s industrial and rebellious past. Our volunteers are the friendly faces who welcome and engage visitors, answering their questions, and revealing the history and stories of Brewhouse Yard: Life beneath Castle Rock. This is an opportunity to volunteer in a truly unique social history museum which tells the stories of some of the people who lived on this site.
What you will be doing
- Presenting a welcoming and professional image to all visitors.
- Being responsible for security and fire evacuation (training provided)
- Helping to keep the museum clean and tidy at the beginning and end of the day
- Scanning and checking tickets
- Learning about the history of Brewhouse in order to engage with our visitors
- Telling the various stories of Brewhouse Yard in an informative and engaging way
- Supporting other volunteers on site (i.e. during first shifts, special events etc.)
- If you have a craft skill, engaging in that while on duty
- Helping with special events e.g Christmas, Hallowe’en etc.
The skills you need
- Excellent communication skills and spoken English
- Be able to take responsibility for a small museum site (with others)
- Have enthusiasm for arts, heritage and museums
- The confidence to deal with basic security and fire evacuation duties
- A passion for social history and particularly that of Nottingham
- Willingness to dress in period costume and confidence to speak ‘in character’
- Be reliable, and have good timekeeping
- Be committed to the idea of volunteering and to being part of a fully diverse workforce.
