Christmas Through The Ages

Join us at Nottingham Castle and grounds to experience ‘Christmas Through The Ages’. Step back in time to explore how residents celebrated the festive season, spanning over 400 years.

You will be greeted by ‘Christmas Present’ and guided down through the medieval cave system of Mortimer’s Hole, to be welcomed by ‘Christmas Past’ at the atmospheric Brewhouse Yard. Here you can explore Christmas through the lens of the Yard’s occupants, from each of the last four centuries. Immerse yourself in the sights and smells of the Victorian era, learn about the origin of yule logs and make a Christmas wish, while stirring the medieval figgy pudding – it’s tradition! As the festive finale to you visit, explore our specially decorated caves within Brewhouse Yard, adding your own traditions to the story for ‘Christmas Yet to Come’.

Typically takes visitors approx. 40 minutes – 1 hour. All visitor to arrive 15 minutes before the start time, e.g. 11 am slot, visitors should arrive for 10.45 am.

Please note: This ticket is an optional extra. The ‘Pay once come all year round’ standard admission ticket is required in addition to the Christmas Through The Ages ticket to enter the Nottingham Castle site. The Standard Admission is £12 Adult, Kids go free (15 years & under, 3 with each paid adult) – ‘Pay once visit all year round’ admission ticket to be arranged separately as well as this per person ticket for the Christmas Through The Ages.

Access information: Please note that this tour contains a descent though a stepped cave tunnel with uneven stairs. For visitors with limited mobility please email us any access requirements in advance. Although all are welcome, we recommend a minimum age of 8 years for the experience. Email us in advance to discuss at nottingham.castle@nottinghamcity.gov.uk (allow 72 hours ahead of booking to arrange & confirm via email that your day & time will be possible to arrange).

Extra information: The experience lasts approximately 45 minutes and ends at Brewhouse Yard.

The Tour Route

Nottingham Castle & cave route

Visitors arrive at Nottingham Castle allowing at least 15 mins ahead of their tour start time.

The Tour will begin in the cave tour waiting area where you will be greeted by ‘Christmas Present’ and guided down through the medieval cave system of Mortimer’s Hole.

Visitors will be escorted down Mortimer’s Hole to see this Historic Nature of the site, and welcomed by ‘Christmas Past’ at the atmospheric Brewhouse Yard.

Inside Brewhouse Yard, visitors will go through each room that is festively decorated to see what Christmas looked like in England through the ages.
