Nottingham Castle Christmas Countdown Clock: Day 19
Welcome to the Nottingham Castle Christmas Countdown, where each night, we’ll be sharing an item from the world-class collections in the Castle’s Galleries in the lead up to Christmas.
Tonight, we’re sharing this rare commemorative lace panel, which is currently on display in our Nottingham Lace Gallery. The panel depicts the Magga Dan expedition ship, used during the first successful overland crossing of Antarctica by Dr Vivian Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1958. The aurora borealis illuminates a snowy landscape with seals, explorers, tents and equipment, penguins, huskies and sleds laden with drums and boxes. It is made with hand-coloured cotton by Stiebel and Co. Ltd and was designed by John Ivon Belton.
Tune in tomorrow as we continue our countdown to Christmas.
