Welcome to day 3 of the Nottingham Castle Christmas Countdown Clock. Tonight, we’re sharing ‘The Dwarf Fiddler’ by Cornelis Pietersz, which is currently on display in our Art Gallery. Bega was a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade and, like his master, his work often featured scenes from the lives of Dutch peasantry. In this early work by Bega, a cloaked fiddler plays and sings to a group outside a cottage doorway. Some of the onlookers, including a boy with a hoop and a couple in an embrace, join in his song. On the left, a male figure in a red waistcoat sits with his back to us. There is a tankard beside his stool.

Join us tomorrow as we share another item from our collection for the Castle’s Christmas Countdown Clock.
