Delightful Diaries

This week we’re looking at one of the most famous residents of Nottingham Castle, who lived there through one of the most turbulent episodes in its history, and the diary she wrote about her experiences.

Lucy Hutchinson lived in Nottingham Castle in the 1640s (over 350 years ago!!) during the British Civil War. The King had declared war on the elected Parliament (think the Queen declaring war on Boris Johnson) which led to years of battles and chaos across the country. Lucy supported Parliament and Nottingham remained in Parliament’s control throughout the war – even through Charles thought the town would support him! He even started the whole civil war thing at Nottingham Castle by raising his standard there in 1642.

Like us right now, Lucy was stuck at home (even though her home was Nottingham Castle) as it wasn’t always safe to go out. She also volunteered as a nurse to help those in need or who were hurt and made sure the Castle had enough provisions to make sure everyone was fed. She wrote this all down in a diary.

What we want you to do this week is create your own “week in lockdown” diary.

Everyday we’d love you to make a note of what your day has been like – this can be writing, a drawing or something creative, or use a phone or tablet to take a photo or make a video of something from your day. At the end of the week, look back at what you’ve done – you should have 7 fascinating memories of this strange time. Maybe in 350 years time historians will be using your diary too!

When you’ve completed your diary and if you want to, you can ask someone at home to share it with us on social media using the hashtag #NottmHeritageHunters or email them to There will be an extra special prize for the best one and their family!
