As a survey of photography over the past four decades, this exhibition could be described as a ‘snapshot’ that offers a view into the varied photographic practices of the period. At the turn of the last century, as photography became a more prominent part of the contemporary art world than it had ever been before, Nottingham City Museums & Galleries acquired a range of photographs from some of the most exciting and interesting artists working in the medium.
The exhibition has been divided into sections that group approaches to image-making or specific themes in photography. As the ‘core’ of our collection was largely purchased in a focussed period from 1997-2004, contemporary practice from that era is the best represented.
As we look towards the future, we continue to bring new photography into our collection. Recent major acquisitions include a body of works from South African photographer Zanele Muholi’s ambitious series ‘Faces and Phases’ (2006-present).
