We are looking for local individuals with an interest, or background in South Asian heritage, to help us investigate our intriguing but sadly underused World Cultures collections, from the Indian sub-continent, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Tibet.
When and where?
We’re running workshops from 10 am -12.30 pm in the ground floor Meeting Room at Nottingham Castle. We will come and meet you before the pay point down at the Castle Gatehouse, so you won’t lose your way. The dates for each of the groups are as follows:
- Group 3: Monday 13th and 20th November
- Group 4: Thursday 11th, 18th and 25th January
Please contact Curator Ann Inscker ann.inscker@nottinghamcity.gov.uk to find out more.

NCM 1879-32 | Ganesha shrine, purchased from the Indian Salon at the 1878 Paris Exhibition, 1850-1878
Why do we want you?
Your voices will bring a new depth and understanding to these collections, helping us to understand their context, use and any ethical concerns we should note in their future interpretation and storage. You might also recommend that we consider repatriating certain objects to their country of origin.

NCM 1903-25 | South Asian Betel nut cutters, 1700-1799

What will you be doing?
We will run three morning workshop sessions at Nottingham Castle for each group. We will show you an initial special selection of material and enabling you to handle and respond to it. For the last two sessions you will be able to select your own objects from a collection of almost 400 items! Prompt questions, history files and some reference books are available to help you, but you may simply want to write a family anecdote, a poem, or respond in some other way to the objects.
What skills do you need?
There are no right or wrong answers and if you need help completing the forms, one of our volunteers will be able to help or scribe for you. You don’t need any particular skills just an interest in South Asian culture and ideally an ability to attend each of the three sessions.

Ceramic bottle made by the Bombay School of Art and purchased from the Indian Salon ant the 1878 Paris Exhibition, 1800-1878
What’s in it for you?
An opportunity to see and handle museum objects which may be culturally significant to you and to shape their future use and interpretation. A chance to make new friends, to look around the newly refurbished Nottingham Castle and to develop new skills. There will also be volunteering opportunities at the end of the project, to look more closely at this collection, or elsewhere within the service but only if you would like to.
