Late Night with Lumina
Late Night with Lumina
21 October 2021 – 7-9pm
An evening of participatory activities that celebrate women in the arts.
Join Katie Sandoval Meade to create a mixed media portrait inspired by the historical female characters who lived and worked at Nottingham Castle. Play with colours, textures and decorative details inspired by the collections in the Art Gallery. Take a cheeky selfie using our period portrait inspired ‘selfie-booth’.
Create your own journal inspired by the writing of Lucy Hutchinson, resident of the Castle during the Civil War. You will have the chance to learn some new skills from artist Jess Emsley and experiment with simple bookbinding techniques.
Andrea Jaeger will lead a VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) Look and Listen activity, where participants will be encouraged to slow down and look closely at one image from Nottingham Castle’s collection for one hour. Join a group discussion utilising the method of VTS to share what you see, think and feel about the image. Listen to one another and engage in mindful conversations in this safe space.
Listen to a collection of experimental sound compositions using field recordings of multiple Jacquard looms at Cluny Lace Factory Ltd. The metronomic sounds influenced artist Aisling Ward to explore the histories and choreographic rhythms of collective female labour in her hometown, whilst also revealing a sonic cast of the last remaining lace factory in Nottingham.
Lumina Collective
Lumina Collective is a creative group, based in Backlit Nottingham, exploring feminism in the arts, .
Lumina Collective explore feminism and issues of equality and diversity within the arts, meeting regularly at Backlit to catch-up and discuss ideas, projects and workshops.
The collective originally started as a branch of the Art + Feminism campaign which seeks to improve coverage of gender, feminism, and the arts on Wikipedia by editing the site and creating new listings. Following the campaign, the group continued to meet regularly and formed Lumina Collective to continue the conversation.
We meet monthly to catch up over a cup of tea and to talk about all things art and feminism, often exploring this in relation to what’s on at Backlit Gallery. As a collective, we organise events and projects which compliment Backlit’s public program and invite participation with the local community. We are a diverse group with different interests and skills and are always looking for ways in which we can support each-other in our own creative and professional pursuits.
The collective aims to provide a safe and open space for talking about feminism and the arts, for sharing ideas, and for developing new projects as a group. As a collective interested in feminism, we find it important to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible and are always happy to welcome new members or those who wish to join the conversation.
