Raise the Standard | Black Knight Historical
Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 August 2022
‘On August 12th, 1642, King Charles 1 issued a proclamation to all his subjects living on the north side of the River Trent, and within twenty miles south of the river, to assemble at Nottingham on the 22nd of August, “where we intend to erect our Standard Royal, in our just and necessary defence, and whence we resolve to advance forward for the suppression of the said Rebellion, and the protection of our good subjects among them, from the burden of the slavery and insolence under which they cannot but groan until they be relieved by us.‘
Our recreation of this iconic event features King Charles and escort, mounted on horseback, with banners, drums, soldiers and civilians supporting the cause, plus opponents led by the pro-Parliamentary Colonel Hutchinson, who later commanded the Castle garrison and Nottingham itself.
There will be musket firing during the day (times to be confirmed) as part of the Ceremony and re-enactment of the actual flag being unfurled and raised.
There will also be talks on the Civil War by Rik Sowden, period encampments, cookery and crafts of the time, and lots of noise and smoke!
This event is included in the general admission ticket to Nottingham Castle.
